What does getting vitamins in an IV mean? Can’t I just take vitamins in pill form?

Top of the page

You may be wondering what the difference is between taking vitamins intravenously vs. the more common pill form.

People who suffer from inadequate amounts of vitamins and minerals not only suffer from reduced immune function and exhibit some of the symptoms listed above, but more often than not, the effects of malnutrition also appear on their skin. Breakouts, uneven skin tone, dull skin, flaky skin, and eczema are often the result of malnutrition and unabsorbed nutrients.

You may be wondering what the difference is between taking vitamins intravenously vs. the more common pill form.People who suffer from inadequate amounts of vitamins and minerals not only suffer from reduced immune function and exhibit some of the symptoms listed above, but more often than not, the results of malnutrition appear on their skin.  Breakouts, uneven skin tone, dull skin, flaky skin and eczema are often the result of malnutrition and unabsorbed nutrients.

Lack of Vitamin Intake

Intravenous therapy (IV therapy treatment) is the administration of liquid solutions directly into a vein. In the case of our vitamin IV therapy in Los Angeles, the vitamins are injected directly into your bloodstream rather than absorbed through your stomach after being routed through the digestive system. This direct route offers far better absorption than the vitamins you can take in a pill, tablet or liquid form. For example, digestive diseases are extremely prevalent and may prevent proper digestion of minerals and vitamins. Crohns’s disease, Irritable bowel syndrome, Lactose intolerance, colitis, ulcers and diarrhea can all prevent proper absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.

IV Drip vs. Pill Form

Another example of why our IV Drip in Los Angeles works better than vitamins in a pill form is the improved nutrient delivery for Celiacs. Celiacs are those people who for genetic reasons lack the proper enzymes to digest gluten in their gastrointestinal tract. Gluten is the stuff in breads and crackers that keeps everything together. When they eat gluten found in breads and other common foods, Celiacs get stomach aches and other ailments such as diarrhea and stomach pain. For Celiacs, the most critical repercussion of eating gluten is the stomach’s inability to absorb nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract for up to two days. The celia in the stomach lining “lays down” and doesn’t absorb, so Celiacs who are taking vitamins in pill form are unable to absorb vitamins that are passed through the GI tract.

There are estimated to be 1 celiac for every 133 people living in the U.S., or close to 1% of the population (via: celiac.com).  Celiac disease is perhaps the most common genetic disorder in the United States, as well as one of the most poorly diagnosed diseases.  Because it’s been poorly diagnosed, many people are unaware that they have Celiacs disease.

Here is a list of the vitamins we include in our Multi-Vitamin Infusion (MVI):

Vitamin/Mineral Symptoms/Causes of Deficiency Benefits
fat soluble
Vitamin A Diets deficient in both vitamin A and beta-carotene can lead to severe visual impairment and blindness.

Symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency:

  • Decreased steroid synthesis
  • Dry eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Hypothyroidism (low thyroid production)
  • Increased susceptibility to infections
  • Increased susceptibility to vaginal yeast infections
  • Night blindness
  • Poor tooth & bone function
  • Poor wound healing
  • Rough, scaly skin

Causes of Vitamin A deficiency:

  • Antibiotics
  • Cholesterol-lowering medications
  • Diabetes
  • Laxatives
  • Malabsorption
  • Malnutrition
  • Medication/products that decrease fat absorption
Vitamin A helps form and maintain healthy teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes, and skin; Supports vision and sight as well as the immune system in helping prevent infections.
Vitamin D People who get little exposure to sunlight are most at risk of Vitamin D deficiency.  Fat soluble Vitamin D is not a vitamin, it is a hormone that becomes active with the aid of the sun’s rays. Adequate amounts of Vitamin D is necessary for preventing bone loss.  It also controls the levels of calcium in the blood, is essential for building strong bones and teeth, and helps strengthen the immune system. Necessary for thyroid function & blood clotting.
Vitamin E People who are zinc depleted or cannot absorb dietary fat may be at risk of a Vitamin E deficiency. Vitamin E deficiency is usually characterized by neurological problems associated with nerve degeneration in hands and feet. Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals in the body that cause tissue and cellular damage. Vitamin E also contributes to a healthy circulatory system and aids in proper blood clotting and improved wound healing. Some studies have shown that Vitamin E decreases symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and certain types of breast disease.
Vitamin K
(only in IV + K)
Deficiencies of Vitamin K have been linked to: heavy menstrual bleeding, anemia, easy bruising, nosebleeds, hematuria (blood in the urine), bleeding gums and osteoporosis. Vitamin K’s benefits may not be widely-known, but it’s one of the most important anti-aging therapies. Vitamin K regulates the production and flow of calcium, which makes it a key player in the prevention and treatment of many of the most common and debilitating age-related diseases. Vitamin K is also one of the major regulators of cardiovascular activity and improves blood circulation.
fat soluble
Thiamine (B1) Thiamin deficiency occurs as a result of many factors, including crash dieting, alcohol abuse, liver dysfunction, kidney dialysis, and those who consume a lot of sweets, soft drinks, and highly processed foods. A lack of sufficient thiamine in a diet can cause loss of appetite, poor digestion, chronic constipation, loss of weight, mental depression, nervous exhaustion, and insomnia.

The processing of carbohydrates (sugars and starches) in the body depends on availability of Vitamin B6. This vitamin is particularly important in facilitating the breakdown of glycogen stored in muscle cells, and to a lesser extent, in the liver.  Further, because of its key role in the formation of new cells, Vitamin B6 is especially important for healthy function of connective tissue that regenerates itself quickly.
Biotin (B7) Signs of Biotin deficiency include thin hair, brittle nails, balding, a rash located on facial areas as well as depression, loss of appetite, hallucinations, numbness in body extremes, fatigue and lethargy.

Vitamin B12 is frequently used in combination with other B vitamins to help maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells. It is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. It exists in most animal foods, hence vegetarians and vegans should take a B12 supplement.
Vitamin C Symptoms of a deficiency can include tiredness, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, a rash on the legs, fluid retention, depression, anemia and bleeding gums. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which are nutrients that block some of the damage caused by free radicals.  Vitamin C also helps build and maintain tissues and strengthens the immune system and can also decrease total and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides to help protect against heart disease.
minerals
Calcium Calcium is the mineral most likely to be deficient in the average diet. A mild insufficiency of calcium over the long term may result in thinning bones, termed osteoporosis or the softening of bony tissue, called osteomalacia. While the majority of calcium is located in the bones and the teeth, it is also required for blood coagulation, nerve function, production of energy, the beating of the heart, proper immune function and muscle contraction. Additional research suggests that calcium may help to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Calcium supplements should be avoided by prostate cancer patients.
Magnesium Magnesium deficiency can affect almost every organ system of the body. One may experience twitches, cramps, muscle tension, muscle soreness, including back aches, neck pain, tension headaches and jaw joint (or TMJ) dysfunction. Other symptoms include insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity and restlessness with constant movement, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and premenstrual irritability. Magnesium is a critical co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body. Magnesium aids in the body’s absorption of calcium and also plays a key role in the strength and formation of bones and teeth. This means that those at risk for osteoporosis can benefit from taking magnesium. Magnesium also is vital for maintaining a healthy heart and also aids in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Magnesium also works to keep muscles properly relaxed and can be especially beneficial to fibromyalgia patients.

Alternative Approach : Intravenous Vitamins Might Help Control Hot Flashes in Men
Chicago Daily Herald, 11-30-06
The men in the study received a combination of B vitamins and vitamin C intravenously every week. They recorded both intensity and frequency of hot flashes. Although the study lasted eight weeks, hot flashes ceased after a few sessions of intravenous vitamins. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this doctor and his nurse Rose. They are professional, attentive, have gone above and beyond to care for me, are accessible, are extremely knowledgeable, and in the forefront of innovation & technology beyond the rest of the industry. Was recommended by a friend and I’m so happy I listened. I haven’t had any work done before but I recently turned 35 and I’ve noticed some changes. I went in for a lip filler and asked for it to be super subtle and he definitely delivered. They are perfect! I also asked him what else he would do. He was totally honest and said my skin was pretty well maintained and only recommended minor botox on the eyelid, which I will go back for.Parking was easy. The staff was great. And the doctor was honest and thorough. Will be back soon!

I’m 43 and I look 30. Enough said.Butttt if you’re asking..Parking is great. Facilities are incredibly clean and well kept. Doctor is so skilled you will never walk away looking like a plastic real housewife of whatever city they are currently filming in. I’ve sent every client that sits in my chair to this man and every single one loves him. 👏🏻 his team is sweet and helpful. It’s really the only place on the west side OR in my opinion Los angeles to go for any cosmetic procedure. Thanks Doc!

I did my first-ever facial treatment here recently - a Frazel laser on my neck and face. I did a lot of research on treatment options and wanted to start with the Fraxel. I felt comfortable with Dr. Sarshad and I saw excellent results, as he stated I would. My skin felt tight right after treatment, a few days after treatment I had dead skin and was very serious about post-care: not scratching, not picking at the skin and covering my face from the sun. The tightness was so much that I would put hylauonic acid (though next time beta glucan) on my face. The surface imperfections on my skin were significantly reduced, my skin tightened and, on their own accord, acquintances noticed I looked younger, I definitely noticed too. The treatment was crazy painful for me on the neck though. Dr. Sarshad and Rose gave post-care instructions that I followed. I have since done several other treatments but the Frazel is #1. Thank you so much!

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! The treatment wasn't effective at all and the compliance team wasn't very responsive to my calls/emails. I had to ring them a couple of times and up to now they haven't resolved my issue. I'm not going back to their clinic!!! I JUST NEED MY MONEY BACK!

This place is so awesome and welcoming! Everyone makes you feel right at home. The doctor is very honest and there is no upselling! Dr. Sarshad takes his time and explains the process. I actually asked about an additional procedure and Dr. Sarshad said I did not need it and explained why. Rose the Aeshetician is very warm and easy to talk to about your concerns and will recommend treatments you can benefit from if you ask her. I really appreciate their honesty and results. There are no gimmicks and upselling just providing great professional services by a M.D (not a P.A). Just give them a try, you’ll never go anywhere else! This is an honest review that is way over due!

I have been using Dr Sarshad’s services for 2 years and have found several factors that elevate this practice above the place I had been using for the past 10 years nearby. I have never had to wait for my turn to be seen. He is very punctual and doesn’t overbook. Dr. S. always makes sure that the procedure is pain free. That’s never happened elsewhere. His prices are better than nearby med spas. His staff is super polite and friendly. They answer the phone promptly. And last but not least, we have always enjoyed great conversation whenever I come in. He is well traveled and has a friendly way of sharing his experiences.

His office staff are informative and professional and don’t make you wait for hours like other facilities. I won’t be going anywhere else. This is a gem of a medical spa in Culver City. There aren't enough stars for Dr Sarshad Ramin, Rose and staff they are kind and caring. My blood pressure was through the roof and I had not been to my MD since the pandemic. The Dr told me to go to my MD or the ER asap. My SM Dr recently retired and I had to search for a new one, Since then he has helped me lower my blood pressure and literally saved my life. The menu at Cosmetique Aesthetics has everything to look better and feel better - from IVs, weight loss options, injections and surgery.

To begin with let’s start off with how careful and respectful the doctor and staff are. They make sure you feel welcomed and safe. I came in for dermal filler for my lips and came out looking so good and very happy. I actually went somewhere else before coming here and it was the worst they left them so bad and didn’t know if there were going to be able to fix them. Luckily Dr. Sarshad was able to fix them and make them look good as new. Words wouldn’t explain how happy I am of my results. Thank you!

I have been coming to Cosmetique for years and would never go anywhere else. From the professional staff that feels like your best friend to the very knowledgeable doctor who always has the latest in technology available, I just love it here. The staff and doctor are truly invested in their patients with constant follow-up and wellness checks after procedures. As soon as you walk in you instantly feel like you are not just another appointment on their calendar for the day, you are family. I had severe melasma covering 1/2 of my face. It had gotten so bad I didn”t want to leave the house without a mask of makeup to cover the dark splotches all over my face. Dr. Sarshad started me on a 6 month program. I am 3 months in and my skin looks so good now, I can leave the house confidently with no makeup. I also get dysport injections for the wrinkles in my forehead. I instantly look and feel 10 years younger! This office has improved my quality of life and mental health so significantly, they are my angels of self care.
